A large portion of the economic activity of the area of the Franches-Montagnes occurs in Saignelégier. Two industrial areas erected over the past 20 years host several flourishing businesses associated with the watch making industry and have contributed significantly to the prosperity of the community. An industrial cheese dairy produces several cheeses, including the famous „Tête de Moine“ and also provides for a generous contribution to the local economy. The expansion of the industrial zone in 2007 will offer an attractive location for additional companies.
Nevertheless, the administrative, trading, banking, insurance, and hotel industries make up the majority of the workforce in Saignelégier. The community provides for an excellent infrastructure for all aspects of the administration services industry in particular. In close proximity in this main area of the Franches-Montagnes are public health services such as the regional hospital, with an integrated assisted living home for senior citizens. Further, Saignelégier is the central location of the Jurassic tourist board. Such a wide array of economic sectors generating employment! Agriculture, on the other hand, comprises approximately 10% of the actual working population.
